Da Frat Boyz – “Freshman Year” Mixtape

My feelings on Southern hip-hop have been soured in the past few years by the over-saturation of the game with the cookie-cutter “chant & repeat”-type artists, as well as the lack of original subject matter in the rhymes. I mean, seriously, who told Plies that he should rap? (Hint: it wasn’t me). Of course, I loved artists like Goodie Mob, Outkast, and pretty much the entire Dungeon Family… Killer Mike still goes hard, and by now you should all know of my love for the NC-based Hall of Justus collective.
New to the scene are Hotlanta’s Da Frat Boyz, who just released a new mixtape, Freshman Year. I can’t lie, I’m feelin’ this one! I’m down with J. Strap, who did quite a bit of the production on this album, and I’ve always been a fan of his work… he does a lot of work with Stax-era soul music, which in this humble blogger’s opinion, is far better than the overly-simplistic beats that plague a lot of Southern rap music. Check his work on “If We Don’t Make It”:

If you like that, there’s a lot more of J. Strap’s work on Freshman Year. You can download it here.
